My Story

I've always been passionate about urban planning and geography since childhood. However, it took me some time to find my career path in the field of Urban Planning. Alongside my passion for urban planning, I also have a deep attachment to specific places, such as towns and cities, which has led to a strong connection with my hometown, Kandy. I believe that my interest in urban planning and my attachment to places complement each other. This synergy is the driving force behind the creation of the Kandy Planning Lab.

In terms of my professional background, I am engaged both in my MSc. research at the University of Peradeniya in Kandy and in my role as a Sustainability Consultant at co-energi (Pvt.) Ltd., a sustainability consulting firm based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. You can read more about my research here. Due to these commitments, I divide my time between Colombo and Kandy. Moreover, I am a member of the Global Walkability Correspondent Network (GWCN), where I serve as a regional chapter lead. You can learn more about my work with GWCN here.

Urban development in my country can be described as auto-oriented and hostile to pedestrians. A hierarchical and disconnected road network, urban sprawl, lack of regulations and planning, poor pedestrian infrastructure, and inadequate public transportation are key contributing factors.

Although most people agree that our cities and towns are in poor condition, few seem to understand the reasons behind this or have the drive to take action. Many people simply blame politicians while refusing to take responsibility or have given up altogether, believing that improvement is impossible.

I strongly believe in the power of grassroots movements with clear, informed goals and agendas, as well as the need for public awareness of best urban planning practices. By looking at how urban environments have been transformed for the better in other countries, we can see how small-scale approaches can lead to significant transformations.
